Report: Sri Lanka Cricket Team Fought at a Casino

Cricket in Sri Lanka was criticized

After leaving the World Cup, Sri Lanka's cricket team engaged in dishonorable behavior, including brawls in casinos, corruption, and criminal activity, according to an investigation.

Less than two months after winning the 2022 Asia Cup Final, the Sri Lankan team was shocked by Namibia at the most recent T20 cricket World Cup and failed to advance from its Super 12 group.

a multitude of negative behavioral issues, both criminal and otherwise

An impartial investigation into the team's behavior uncovered numerous unpleasant and unlawful behavioral issues. One member was accused of sexual assault, there were fights among casino patrons, and they followed a bogus prophet's counsel, among other issues.

Criminal activity

Investigators disapproved of the behavior of players, officials, and acquaintances during the World Cup in Australia in October and November of last year. The investigation was overseen by retired Supreme Court Justice Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena.

Since then, the investigation team has pleaded with the sports minister to get involved and asked that the Sri Lanka Cricket board be looked into.

got into a brawl after he protested being photographed

The team's participation in a fight at a nearby casino was the most widely reported infraction. Six of his teammates and the previously unidentified bowler Chamika Karunaratne got into a scuffle when he objected to having his photo taken. Following the outburst, Karunaratne received a fine and a suspended ban last year.

The crew only ended up to the casino because the squad was looking for food, and "all eateries in Australia close after 8:00 or 8:30 p.m.," according to team manager Mahinda Halangoda, who spoke to authorities. The panel concluded that this was incorrect and suggested that all athletic teams be prohibited from visiting casinos.

Shortly after his squad was disqualified from the competition, batter Danushka Gunathilaka was also detained on four counts of rape. He and his friends were refused bail after being accused of engaging in non-consensual intercourse with a Sydney woman.

corruption indications

It was revealed that former performance manager Jerome Jayaratne joined the group in Australia for ten days and received $7,000 on a non-criminal level. He chose to spend the time instead visiting family in Melbourne, away from the team.

Through marriage, Jayaratne is linked to the Rajapaksas, a prominent political family in Sri Lanka.

Mahela Jayawardene, a former captain, traveled with the team to Australia solely to open a new location for his Ministry of Crab restaurant franchise.

& an unexpectedly significant role was played by a man posing as a prophet.

The oddest aspect of the study revealed that an individual who identified himself as a prophet contributed a shockingly significant amount to the team's efforts. The now-suspended Karunaratne took the man's instruction and, against the hotel's fire safety warning, left an oil lamp running all night in his room.

The panel concluded by saying that the team's physical condition needed to be improved.

The inquiries about the probe or demands for an audit have not yet received a response from Sri Lanka Cricket. Roshan Ranasinghe, the minister of sports, stated that he will carefully review the findings and utilize it to assess whether or not legal sanctions are necessary.
